Tonight (May 26) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai, Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team to bowl out an opposition in an IPL final. They took only 18.3 overs to skittle out the Sunrisers Hyderabad for 113. Andre Russell (3-19), Mitchell Starc (2-14), and Harshit Rana (2-24) shared seven wickets. Here is the list of lowest totals in an IPL final.
Sunrisers Hyderabad 113 (18.3) v Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai, 2024 (ongoing)
Opting to bat, SRH were soon in disarray, losing three wickets inside the fifth over. They reached 47-3 but lost wickets again, and wilted away against a KKR attack with no weak link to collapse to the lowest total in an IPL final. The only resistance came from Pat Cummins (24) and Aiden Markram (20).
Chennai Super Kings 125-9 (20) v Mumbai Indians, Kolkata, 2013 (lost)
With a 32-ball 60 not out, Kieron Pollard muscled MI to 148-9. Lasith Malinga (2-22), Mitchell Johnson (2-19), and Harbhajan Singh (2-14) then reduced CSK to 58-8 before MS Dhoni (63 not out in 45) launched a counterattack. He added 41 for the ninth wicket and 26 for the tenth, but it was never going to be enough.
Rising Pune Supergiant 128-6 (20) v Mumbai Indians, Hyderabad, 2017 (lost)
Having beaten MI thrice in three matches in the season, RPS had reason to be upbeat, especially after reducing MI to 129-8, at that point the second-lowest total in an IPL final. Ajinkya Rahane (44 in 38 balls) and Steve Smith (51 in 50) kept them in the hunt, but they lost their way in the middle overs and were left to score four off the last ball. Washington Sundar was run out while going for the third run.
Mumbai Indians 129-8 (20) v Rising Pune Supergiant, Hyderabad, 2017 (won)
A couple of hours before they would stifle RPS, MI found things difficult against the RPS new-ball bowlers and meandered to 32-2 in the powerplay. They then became 65-5 after 11 overs. It took a late resistance from Krunal Pandya (47 in 38 balls) to take them to what seemed like an inadequate total at that point.
Rajasthan Royals 130-9 (20) v Gujarat Titans, Ahmedabad, 2022 (lost)
RR’s first appearance in an IPL final since 2008 ended in disappointment. Their powerplay score (44-1) was not too bad, but none of their batters could break the shackles as Rashid Khan (4-0-17-1) and Hardik Pandya (3-17) choked them in the middle overs. GT barely broke into sweat to win the IPL in their maiden season.
