Watch: Ahead of the World Test Championship final against Australia, Yashasvi Jaiswal joined a practice session with the India team in England.
India and Australia will play the World Test Championship 2021-23 final at The Oval from June 7. Ahead of the match, the Indian cricketers left for England after their respective teams played their last matches at the 2023 IPL.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was not part of the original Indian squad, or even listed as a standby option. However, after Ruturaj Gaikwad, one of the reserves, opted out of contention ahead of his wedding, the selectors roped in the in-form Jaiswal.
Jaiswal had an excellent IPL at the top of the order for the Rajasthan Royals, finishing the season with 625 runs at a strike rate of 164 and an average of 48.08. Against the Kolkata Knight Riders, he hit the fastest fifty in IPL history, off only 13 balls.
But Jaiswal’s obvious talent is not restricted to the shortest format alone. He averages a staggering 80.21 in first-class cricket, having converted nine of his 11 fifty-plus scores into hundreds.
In the last Indian winter, he amassed 1,169 runs at 83.50, including 213 and 144 for the Rest of India in the Irani Cup match in March. He also made 146 in an unofficial ‘Test’ for India A against Bangladesh A in November, immediately after a Duleep Trophy double hundred.
The video shared by ICC features Jaiswal practising in the nets, during the course of which R Ashwin walks up with words of advice. The same video also shows Virat Kohli taking time out to demonstrate – going by the gestures – front-foot play.
It is unlikely that Jaiswal will feature in the starting XI ahead of captain Rohit Sharma or the in-form Shubman Gill, but he may be called up in emergency.
