Highlights: Yashasvi Jaiswal blitzes fastest IPL fifty, just misses hundred in astonishing innings
Last night (May 11), Yashasvi Jaiswal immortalized himself in the Indian Premier League record books by scoring the fastest-ever IPL fifty against Kolkata Knight Riders in a brazen exhibition of high-quality T20 batsmanship – Here are the highlights from his 98* (47).
In a must-win game chasing a below-average total of 150 at the Eden Gardens, Rajasthan Royals needed to be calm and calculative in their approach and had to make sure that they encountered no hiccups while going about what should have been a routine run-chase. Jaiswal, however, had other ideas.
KKR opened the bowling with their captain, Nitish Rana, hoping it would provide a good match-up against a left-handed Jaiswal, but they were wrong by a fair margin. Jaiswal stepped down the track and lofted the first ball of the innings over the long-on fence for six, and then followed it up with another maximum, this time with a traditional sweep shot over backward square leg.
Rana tried altering the angles and the lengths but to no avail. Whatever he served was met with absolute disdain by Jaiswal, who ended up scoring 26 runs in the first over, the most by any batter ever in the first over of an innings in the history of the IPL. If that hadn’t killed the chase already, Jaiswal followed it up with another 24 runs off his next seven balls and registered the fastest-ever IPL fifty in the process, reaching the 50-run mark in 13 deliveries.
If the range that he displayed in his century against the Mumbai Indians wasn’t enough, he doubled down at the Eden Gardens on Thursday (May 11), scoring runs all around the park, with the couple of inside outs he hit against Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine being the most memorable shots of the night.
Towards the end, he had a chance to bring up his second hundred of the season, when Rajasthan required three to win and Jaiswal needed six to reach the three-figure mark. However, he could only manage a four, as he finished the chase remaining not out on 98.
