Watch: Sri Lanka quicks waste two unplayable yorkers on rank tail-ender

Khaled Ahmed two bowled dismissals in Chattogram Test match
by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Bangladesh No.11 Khaled Ahmed was bowled by unplayable yorkers in both innings of the second Test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, at Chattogram.

After beating Bangladesh by 328 runs at Sylhet, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 192 runs at Chattogram to sweep the series 2-0 and scale the joint third spot on the WTC 2023-25 points table.

Up against a formidable 531, Bangladesh were bowled out for 178 in the first innings. They did better in the pursuit of 511, though even there they could make only 318.

A contender for the worst batter in the history of Test cricket, Khaled Ahmed came into the series with 13 runs in 12 Test matches at a princely average of one. A career-defining 22 in the first innings at Sylhet – well over half his career runs – temporarily boosted that number before a second-innings duck brought it down to 2.33.

Khaled batted this high – at No.10 – at Chattogram because debutant Hasan Mahmud was slotted after him. The last pair added three runs – Khaled ran a single and Hasan two – before Asitha Fernando produced a reverse-swinging yorker. It was perhaps wasted on Khaled, who had no answer as the ball hit the base of the middle stump.

By the time the eighth wicket fell in the second innings, a decision had been made: Hasan walked out at No.10, ahead of Khaled, and helped Mehidy Hasan Miraz put on 31 for the ninth wicket.

Khaled walked out at No.11. This time the yorker – from Lahiru Kumara – was on off-stump, but Khaled fared no better: the ball hit the base of the stump. He now has 38 runs at 2.23. In the history of Test cricket, only Mpumelelo Mbangwa (34 runs at 2) has a comparable batting record.
