by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

A panel of Wisden.com writers look back at the year gone by and pick the best ODI innings of 2022.

In our next instalment of our Year in Review series, we look back at what we consider to be the finest men’s ODI innings played this year.

It was a relatively quiet year of ODI cricket with no major international tournament being held, but plenty of bilateral series were played as teams warmed up towards the 2023 ODI World Cup.

2022 in Review: Wisden’s men’s ODI innings of 2022 – Nos.5-2

No.5: Jos Buttler

162* (70) v Netherlands
Amsterdam
June 17

It may have come against a weakened Netherlands team and it may have been one of three England centuries in the innings, but Buttler’s dismantling of the Netherlands was nothing short of jaw dropping. His century arrived in 47 balls, the second fastest in England history (behind his own record of 46) and was an innings that included 14 sixes as England set the world record for the highest ODI score of all time.

No.4: Mehidy Hasan Miraz

100* (83) v India
Mirpur
December 7

The joint highest score by a No.8 in ODI cricket in history. Mehidy became only the second man to score an ODI century from No.8 after he rescued his side from 69-6 and took them to a total of 271 which would be enough for Bangladesh to win by five runs. It was the second match in a row that Mehidy would be the hero after he scored an unbeaten 38 in the previous game that saw Bangladesh win by one wicket.

No.3: Ishan Kishan

210 (131) v Bangladesh
Chattogram
December 10

His first international century, and what an innings it was. At one point, it looked as if Kishan could become the first person to ever score a triple-century in ODI cricket as there were still 14 overs remaining when he finally departed for 210. It was the fastest ever ODI double-hundred coming off 126 balls with his second ton taking just 41 deliveries. It was a fearless, thrilling, record-breaking innings that took India to a total of 409.

No.2: Rishabh Pant

125* (113) v England
Manchester
July 17

The second best ODI innings of the year goes to Rishabh Pant, whose unbeaten 125 against England was superlative in every sense. Pant arrived at the crease with India 21-2 in pursuit of 260. The task then got harder as India fell to 38-3 and 72-4, before Pant, along with Hardik Pandya would compile a faultless 133-run partnership to guide India home. For a player known for breathless innings, this showing from Pant was praised for its maturity as India’s star boy became their go-to man.
