Watch: Sussex debutant Bradley Currie pulled off an outrageous diving grab at the boundary ropes in the 2023 T20 Blast, being described by many as one of the greatest catches of all time.
Social media couldn’t stop gushing over Currie’s sensational effort, which, while being a piece of athletic brilliance, also helped Sussex clinch a narrow six-run win over Hampshire in their South Group match at Hove on June 16. Making the effort even more special was the fact that it was Currie’s first-ever T20.
When Tymal Mills bowled the penultimate ball of the 18th over, Hampshire required 23, with Benny Howell and Chris Wood threatening to take the game away. Mills’ delivery was swatted by Howell towards the leg-side, and looked to be flying to the deep square-leg fence. Then came Currie, running first to reach the ball then flying to intersect its trajectory. He flung himself mid-air as he clutched on to the ball with one hand.
Everything was perfect: from the dive, to the grab and to the balance, ensuring he remained a safe distance away from the ropes.
The effort received plenty of plaudits. Ben Stokes, even after a busy Ashes opener, replied to the video of the catch with “Filth” on Twitter. Dinesh Karthik tweeted: “This has to be one of the greatest catches ever … the distance he covers before diving…phewwwww”.

Earlier in the game, Currie proved to be Sussex’s best bowler, toppling Hampshire’s top order with figures of 3-27 and accounting for James Vince, Toby Albert and Ross Whiteley.
