Watch: Bowler Radha Yadav ran out Meg Lanning with an athletic underarm throw during the 2022 Commonwealth Games final between India and Australia.
The first ever final of the women’s competition in the CWG had some brilliant moments of fielding by India in the first innings. The first of these was a spectacular effort by Yadav to run out Australia captain Lanning, off the first ball of the 11th over.
Yadav pitched the ball up, Beth Mooney pushed it back to her right, and the two Australia players looked for a quick single before deciding against it. In the meantime, as Yadav collected the ball in the follow-through, wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia yelled, “maar de peechhe!” (hit it behind you).
took an aim at the stumps without turning around fully and threw the ball between her legs even as wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia shouted, “maar de peeche” (Hit it behind).
Yadav, almost on Bhatia’s instructions, threw the ball between her legs without turning around fully and hit the stumps. The television umpire confirmed that Lanning had fallen short of the crease, leaving everyone in awe. Perhaps no one was more astonished than Yadav, who stared open-mouthed as her teammates gathered to celebrate the dismissal of Lanning for a 26-ball 36.
India restricted Australia to 161-8 but were unable to cross the line, falling nine runs short to end with the silver medal.
