Durban’s Super Giants posted 157-6 after MI Cape Town opted to bowl in an SA20 match at the Newlands on January 23. Matthew Breetzke took 46 balls for his 48, and the Durban innings seemed to stagnate when he was batting with Marcus Stoinis in the 15th over.
The score read 94-4 in 14.3 overs when Olly Stone bowled a bouncer at Stoinis. The ball came quicker than Stoinis had expected, hit the bat roughly on the splice, and lobbed in the air.
Worse, Stoinis could not control his bat. As his body turned with the shot, his right hand came off the bat. The bat descended in an arc to disturb the stumps.
Stoinis walked back for an 11-ball 10. He became the first to be given hit wicket in SA20 history, and the 11th batter to get out that way in men’s Twenty20 cricket in South Africa.
The dismissal turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as Wiaan Mulder walked to smash 38 not out in 20 balls. For the hosts, George Linde claimed 2-15 and Thomas Kaber 2-20.
In response, Sam Curran (38 in 27 balls) helped Cape Town overcome early blows to reach 87-3 before they caved in against Noor Ahmad (3-22) and Keshav Maharaj (3-18) to eventually finish on 121-9 and lose the game by 36 runs.
