Yuzvendra Chahal was brought in as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja in the first T20I of the ongoing series against Australia. But, seemingly, the decision hasn’t gone down well with Australia head coach Justin Langer.

Jadeja was hit on the helmet in the final over of India’s innings – bowled by Mitchell Starc – and though he continued batting after, even scoring consecutive boundaries off Starc, match referee David Boon accepted India’s request to make a ‘like-for-like’ concussion replacement – sending in leg-spinner Chahal for the finger-spinning all-rounder.

Jadeja walked off gingerly after the end of India’s innings and received physio treatment on his hamstring during the penultimate over but there were no clear signs of a concussion initially as was later confirmed. Being the concussion substitute, Chahal is allowed to bowl his quota of four overs.

Langer was seen in a heated discussion with his former Australia teammate Boon, with captain Aaron Finch also involved before the start of Australia’s chase. While it’s not certain what was being discussed, the nature of Jadeja’s injury or whether Chahal is actually a like-for-like replacement were offered as plausible options.

Perhaps one for the lip readers to decipher what the two were actually talking about.

India finished their innings at 161 with Jadeja scoring 44, India’s second-highest score in the match. Chahal, on the other hand, started with two wickets off his first two overs.
