Watch: David Wiese and Shan Masood combined to create a spectacular fielding effort in the 2023 T20 Blast, completing a relay catch by the boundary ropes during the Yorkshire v Leicestershire match at Leeds.
The Yorkshire duo sent back Rishi Patel in the ninth over, when the Leicestershire batter clanked a Ben Mike delivery straight down towards the sightscreen. As it sailed towards the fence, Wiese ran in from the side, leapt in the air and managed to grab on. As he fell over, he managed to parry it back to Masood, who had come circling in, flinging the ball the enough for it to accurately and comfortably reach his teammate.
The scorecard eventually credited Masood, but it was the 38-year-old Wiese’s agility that made up for most of the magic.
Leicestershire still managed to put on 195-5 on the board, but Yorkshire made short work of the chase, with Adam Lyth and Dawid Malan’s 158-run stand setting the platform for a comfortable finish. Wiese, promoted to four, played a little helping hand, smashing an 8-ball 13 to complete an eight-wicket win with 11 balls to spare.
Wiese is no stranger to relay catches: in fact, his effort alongside Shane Watson for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2016 against Delhi Daredevils is regarded as one of the best combined fielding bits in the tournament’s history.
