MI Cape Town amassed 243-5 after Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to field at the Wanderers. Rassie van der dussen (104 in 50 balls, nine fours, six sixes) and Ryan Rickelton (98 in 49, six fours, eight sixes) added 200 for the opening stand, off 93 balls.
Cape Town’s total is now the second-highest in SA20 history, after Durban’s Super Giants’ 254-4 in 2023. Van der Dussen and Rickelton also got the third- and fifth-highest individual scores of the tournament and the highest for Cape Town, while the opening partnership is the highest for any wicket in the competition’s history.
Brevis walked out after Imran Tahir dismissed van der Dussen, and dispatched the second ball he faced to the extra-cover boundary.
Lizaad Williams pitched a ball up in the next over. As Brevis went for a straight heave, his left hand came off the bat, but even then the ball seemed certain to clear du Plessis at mid off.
But du Plessis ran sideways with his eyes on the ball. As the ball descended, he fully stretched his right hand and held the ball, hitting the ground in the process.
Cape Town lost five wickets for 43 runs in a span of 28 balls, but their total turned out to be too big for Joburg after they were reduced to 47-4. Leus du Plooy (48 in 24 balls, six fours, two sixes) eventually took them to 145 as George Linde and Olly Stone claimed two wickets apiece.
