Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer hit a blistering hundred in the 2024 Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Karnataka today (December 21) to help his team post a mammoth total.
After being sent to bat first in Ahmedabad, Mumbai lost opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi for six. His partner Ayush Mhatre was looking good for his 78 in a 141-run stand with Hardik Tamore before departing in the 30th over. The dismissal brought Iyer to the crease. Shortly, another wicket fell as Tamore was bowled by Shreyas Gopal for 84, leaving Mumbai at 178-3.
That didn’t prevent Iyer from playing his strokes. He blazed his way to a hundred off 50 deliveries before finishing unbeaten on 114 off 55. Iyer’s innings came at a strike rate of 207.27, and was studded with five fours and 10 sixes. He was particularly ruthless against Vidyadhar Patil, smashing the fast bowler for 49 off 17 balls. Patil had the costliest figures among his peers finishing with 103 off his 10 overs.
Iyer was involved in two defining partnerships: A 34-ball 56-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav (20) was followed by a 148-run stand for the fifth wicket with Shivam Dube, who ended with 63 not out off 36, including five fours and as many sixes. The herculean batting effort helped Mumbai rack up 382-4 in 50 overs.
With four 150-plus Test scores and a record-breaking IPL campaign already under his belt, the boy from the backstreets is the new darling of Indian cricket.

Iyer has had a terrific year as a captain so far. First, he began by leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the third IPL title, their first since 2014. Recently, he helped Mumbai win the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, beating Madhya Pradesh by five wickets in the final. His success wasn’t limited to captaincy as he led from the front during Mumbai's title run with 345 runs at an average of 49.28 and a strike rate of 188.52.
In the 2025 IPL mega auction, Iyer was bought for 26.75 crore by Punjab Kings, making him the second-most expensive player in the tournament’s history.
