Kuldeep Yadav, who was in the initial squad named for this series, was ignored from the starting XI in Chennai in India’s first Test against England, while Shahbaz Nadeem made it to the playing XI.
Kuldeep, who was hailed as India’s No.1 spinner in overseas Tests by Ravi Shastri two years ago, continued to be on the sidelines despite India’s spin department losing one more player to injury. Axar Patel was ruled out on the morning of the first Test with a knee injury, and Shahbaz Nadeem and Rahul Chahar were added to the squad from the stand-by players’ list.
According to the pecking order, Kuldeep should have played ahead of Nadeem or Sundar, but the management went with Nadeem, perhaps encouraged by the success of Lasith Embuldeniya against England in Sri Lanka last month.
This isn’t the first time India have ignored Kuldeep from the playing XI despite having him around in the squad. In Australia in the last Test in Sydney, Washington Sundar, a net bowler, was handed a debut ahead of Kuldeep, who was in the main squad. The left-arm wrist spinner was the only player from the India squad (Aside from net bowler Kartik Tyagi) to not play a Test on their injury-ridden, yet successful, tour of Australia.
The recent omission has, however, triggered more reactions as Kuldeep was still picked in the main squad.
If Kuldeep can’t find a place even now, I wonder what’s in store for him next. Poor guy. Got to feel for him #DoddaMathu #INDvENG

KKR not playing Kuldeep in the IPL, 🇮🇳 not playing Kuldeep even when Ashwin’s partner in crime at home Jadeja is not there. This was the Best time to test him more as the red ball bowler.
In Jan 2019, Shastri said -Kuldeep is our No.1 spinner & that’s how you u TREAT ur No.1 🙂 https://t.co/67AaJ0Mpy2— Vaibhav_MSDianForever🐍 (@V_Trips7781) February 5, 2021
I don’t know. What I know is ashwin and kuldeep should have been 1st choice then 3rd one should have been selected

There’s no justice for Kuldeep. Akshar injured, so the reserve bowler plays. https://t.co/5nC9OlHelU

Got to feel for Kuldeep Yadav. Played just 5 games last IPL, lost his place in the white-ball teams, didn’t get a game in Australia and continues to warm the bench today. He’s a much, much better bowler than that. Hope the team management handles him well. #INDvENG

A few tried to rationalize with the decision given the team combination and the role each spinner is likely to play against this English line-up.
• Kuldeep turns the ball into RHBs
• He isn’t Jadeja’s replacement
• If anything Kuldeep should play over Washi
• But management wants Ravindra Jadeja batting (Sundar) + bowling (Nadeem) as they don’t want to play 6 batters only
• Can only feel sad for Kuldeep now— 󠄪 󠄪 (@ComeToGabbaMate) February 5, 2021
Clearly, England’s struggle against Embuldeniya has prompted the selection of Shahbaz Nadeem, a fine, vastly experienced finger spinner. But I wonder what this means for Kuldeep. Clearly the team management doesn’t rate him too high at thr moment

Seems like as the English Batsmen struggled against Lasith embuldeniya, India hv decided to go with Nadeem.. I would have picked kuldeep though.. #INDvENG
