India's Vaishnavi Sharma became just the second bowler to pick up a hat-trick in a Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup game, finishing with astonishing figures of 5-5 against Malaysia today (January 21).
The left-arm spinner, who was making her debut and replaced Sonam Yadav in India’s XI, created history by becoming the first bowler to claim a hat-trick in the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup. She ended with remarkable figures of 4-1-5-5 during India’s Group A clash at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, which helped shoot out Malaysia for just 31 in just 14.3 overs in the first innings.
Vaishnavi joined South Africa’s Madison Landsman on the elite list of bowlers with hat-tricks in the tournament’s history. Landsman was the first to achieve this milestone during the 2023 edition of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, where she took a hat-trick against Scotland and finished with figures of 4-16.
Vaishnavi opened her account with the wicket of Nur Dania Syuhada in her very first over before she claimed Nuriman Hiyadah three balls later. Her hat-trick came in the fourth over she bowled, dismissing Nur Ain Binti Roslan, Nur Isma Dania, and Siti Nazwah. Malaysia, who were 20-4 after seven overs, lost their remaining six batters for just 11 more runs, with Aayushi Shukla picking up the last wicket.
Zero scores above five for Malaysia batters
No batter from Malaysia could cross five, with the 11 extras adding massively to their tally. As many as four batters were dismissed for a duck in the innings.
Chasing a modest target, India completed the win in just 2.5 overs. Opener Gongadi Trisha scored an unbeaten 27 off 12 deliveries, including five boundaries. She was accompanied by G Kamalini, who was signed by the Mumbai Indians for INR 1.60 crores in the 2025 Women’s Premier League auction, who remained unbeaten on four.
With this emphatic victory, India climbed to the top of Group A with four points and an impressive net run rate of +9.148. Their next fixture is on January 23 against Sri Lanka.
