Bangladesh defeated West Indies by 60 runs in the second ODI between the sides in Basseterre to set up a thrilling conclusion to the ICC Women's Championship.

In the first ODI between the sides on January 19 at the same venue, the hosts had restricted Bangladesh to 198-9, before completing the run-chase in 31.4 overs, thanks to openers Hayley Matthews (104*) and Qiana Joseph (70).

In the second match, the script appeared to be going the same way as West Indies once again chose to field and kept Bangladesh down to a below-par total – bowling them out for 184 in 48.5 overs. Visiting skipper Nigar Sultana Joty was the lone warrior with 68, while Karishma Ramharack took 4-33.

The hosts lost Qiana Joseph early, but still seemed to be on track with the score at 64-3 towards the end of the 16th over. But they were rocked in the space of six balls as Rabeya Khan removed Jannillea Glasgow before the set Shemaine Campbelle (28) and Mandy Mangru were dismissed in the same over by Nahida Akter to leave them at 70-6.

Two overs later, Zaida James was run out to reduce West Indies to 72-7. The last two partnerships added 23 and 16 runs respectively to provide some resistance, but it was only a matter of time before West Indies were skittled for 124, to hand Bangladesh their first-ever ODI victory over these opponents, at the third time of asking.

Updated ICC Women's Championship points table

This result has set up an intriguing finish to the ICC Women's Championship, which determines qualification for this year's World Cup. The win has helped Bangladesh to 21 points, the same as New Zealand who currently occupy the final automatic qualification spot for the tournament.

A win or even a washout in the third ODI will help Bangladesh claim that spot and send New Zealand into the World Cup Qualifiers along with Pakistan, West Indies and Ireland (and Scotland and Thailand). A defeat, on the other hand, will force Bangladesh who join these them instead.
