Gill, who had taken over from the former Pakistan skipper Babar last month, has slipped down a spot after missing the South Africa ODIs. The Indian opener has been rested for the 50-over leg of the tour as he will join the team for the preparation for the Test series that begins on December 26.
Gill currently has 810 rating points, dropping 16 points since his last appearance in the format on November 19 during the World Cup final. Babar, who had a poor World Cup, fell to the second spot for the first time since July 2021 after the event, ending a 952-day reign.
Babar has 824 points in the latest ICC ODI ratings and leads a top three that is capped off by Gill and India’s Virat Kohli. The top five has another Indian on the list, with skipper Rohit Sharma having 754 points. David Warner completes the top five.
Harry Tector from Ireland moves up one place and is now seventh following his 33 against Zimbabwe. The next best-ranked batter from the country in the ODI rankings is Paul Stirling, who is No.28.
There is also a new No.1 bowler in the T20I rankings, with England’s Adil Rashid climbing to the top after a fine showing in the West Indies series. The spinner picked up seven wickets in four games against the West Indies and is only the second bowler from his country to be at the top of the ICC men’s T20I rankings. Graeme Swann had achieved the feat more than 10 years ago.
Rashid was not picked in the IPL 2024 auction on Tuesday, becoming one of the surprise snubs in the event. His compatriot Phil Salt, who made his second successive T20I ton against the Windies, was ignored as well.
