India were eliminated from the 2024 Hong Kong Super Sixes title race after consecutive defeats in their first two matches. However, they are still playing in the competition. Here's what the format of the tournament is like.
The Hong Kong Super Sixes returned after a hiatus of seven years. India didn't have the likeliest of starts as they began with a six-wicket defeat against Pakistan. Their second match against the United Arab Emirates was a must-win game to stay in the hunt for the title race, but they fell short by a run while chasing 131.
Despite being ruled out of the trophy hunt, India still have a chance to not finish the tournament empty-handed. Here's how.
Hong Kong Super Sixes format - The Plate and Bowl competitions
The 12 teams, including hosts Hong Kong, playing in the six-a-side competition between November 1-November 3, have been divided into four groups. The top two sides from each group will enter the quarterfinals, while the third-placed sides will head to the 'Bowl' competition of the tournament.
The loser of the quarterfinals will compete in the ‘plate’ tournament, consisting of two semi-finals and a final, while the remaining four teams will compete for the main title.
After playing six ‘Bowl’ fixtures where each of the four teams face each other once, the top two third-placed sides will play in the ‘Bowl’ final on November 3, while the winners of the two semi-finals from the main competition will be gunning for the trophy later that day.
Having finished last in Group C, India have New Zealand, England and Oman as their competitors in the ‘Bowl’ competition. They faced an early setback in the lower tier of the event as well after a loss to England today. Ravi Bopara’s 14-ball 53, containing six sixes in an over took England to 120-1. India managed 105-3 in response, with Bopara again shining with 2-11.
