South Africa were dismissed for 224 in the first innings of the second Test against England Lions at Cape Town on Monday (February 3).

The Under-19 South Africa side were dismissed for 224 in the first innings of the second 'Test' against England at Cape Town on Monday (February 3).

Eddie Jack led the bowling effort with three wickets as England dismissed South Africa Under-19 for a low score on the opening day of the second Youth Test.

After electing the bat first, the hosts lost Jorich Van Schalkwyk for two as he edged one behind to the keeper. It was one of four catches that Thomas Rew took in the innings.

The Proteas slumped to 74-5 by the 31st over, but captain Bennie Hansen and Paul James steadied the innings with a 73-run stand in 124 balls. The partnership was broken when Archie Vaughan, the England skipper, had Hansen caught by Rew off a reverse sweep attempt. Jack then wrapped up the innings, dismissing James and Nathan Rossouw in the same over, the latter top-scoring with 84.

Fellow seamers Alexander Wade and Harry Moore contributed with two wickets each.

Farhan Ahmed, Rehan’s brother, was also impressive in the game, bowling an extended spell of 23 overs, the most in the innings. Though he picked only one wicket, sending back Chad Mason for 15, he kept things tight. Farhan conceded only 38 runs in his spell, which also contained seven maidens, at an economy rate of 1.65.

England, who narrowly missed out on victory in the first Test last week by just one wicket, were 1 for no loss at stumps.
