Simon Jones, speaking on the Broken Trophy podcast, recalled the best sledge he’s ever heard – a hilarious exchange between first-class cricketers Jonathan Hughes and Alex Morris.
“Didn’t really have any,” Jones said, when asked about the best sledge he’s ever received. “Best sledge I have heard – which is the clean version – was a guy called Jonathan Hughes, he played for Glamorgan, and he was quite a big lad, very good all-rounder, could bowl, could bat.
“I remember Alex Morris was playing for Hampshire. We were playing, and Hughesy kept on playing and missing. Went on for about two-three overs.
“And old Almo – Alex Morris, Almo as we call him – was saying like, ‘My god, you fat whatever, you are shit, blah blah’. Just trying to go at him, go at his size and stuff.”
Jones, who played first-class cricket for Glamorgan until 2012, then witnessed the batsman dish out the perfect riposte.

“Jonny Hughes just put him in the next time, on the spot – he bowled him a half-volley right, he hit him miles.
“He said, ‘Oi, mate! On the way to get your ball, call into McDonald’s on your way back and get me a Big Mac and fries please, I am starving!’ And I was like, that’s a good comeback that. Decent.

“Yeah, he asked him to go and get him a Big Mac and fries. Honest to god, the ball just disappeared. It went miles. It was gone. You could see Almo just losing his stuff.”
