South Australia won the 2024/25 Sheffield Shield final today (March 29), beating Queensland in the final in Adelaide by four wickets and setting a new record for a final-innings chase in the competition's summit clash.

Queensland were on the backfoot from the start of the game, having been bowled out for 95 on the opening day's play. Brendan Doggett took six wickets in less than 12 overs as the Queensland side featuring Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne were skittled.

In response, South Australia put on 271 thanks to a century from Jake Lehmann that followed a tricky start for the eventual winners. Opener Henry Hunt and No.3 Nathan McSweeney were both out for ducks as two of six batters who were out for single figures in the innings, including four ducks.

Despite leading by over 150 runs from the first innings, Queensland rallied to come back into the game in the second. Jack Clayton scored a century, while Jack Wildermuth batting at No.8 also reached three figures. Queensland were all-out for 445 leaving South Australia 270 to get in the final innings. The previous highest successful chase in a Sheffield Shield final was 239, achieved by Victoria in 1991.

South Australia were in trouble early again when Hunt and Conor McInerney were both out in the first 10 overs of the innings. McSweeney was then caught behind for 14 before a mammoth partnership between Jason Sangha and Australia Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey rescued the chase.

Sangha and Carey both scored centuries, putting on 202 runs together before Carey was out for 105. Despite both Lehmann and Liam Scott falling in quick succession after that, Sangha scored an unbeaten 126 to take South Australia over the line with four wickets to spare, helping the side claim a new record for the highest chase in a Sheffield Shield final.
