Rohit Sharma has been added to Mumbai’s squad to face Jammu & Kashmir in the latest round of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy, paving the way for a domestic comeback after nearly a decade.
Rohit, India’s Test and ODI captain, is set to follow BCCI’s directive of bringing international players back into domestic cricket. The move will see him play his first Ranji Trophy game in a while: nine years and two months to be precise. Rohit will play under Ajinkya Rahane.
When was the last time Rohit played a Ranji Trophy match?
The fixture was Mumbai’s 2015/16 Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh at the Wankhede Stadium. Rohit batted at No.4, between Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom would go on to play under him for India. The team was led by Aditya Tare, Rohit’s long-time state and Mumbai Indians teammate.
Rohit was required to bat only once, slamming a 140-ball 113 against a lineup that included Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav, all of whom played for India alongside Rohit at some point. Iyer led the charge with a 110-ball 137, as Mumbai declared on 610-9.
In response, UP managed 440, and were required to follow on. Interestingly, Rohit sent down 14 overs as the sixth bowling option. He bowled a further four overs in the second innings, as UP reached 140-1 before the match was drawn.
What happened to Rohit’s Test career after?
The match was played weeks before India’s four-Test home series against South Africa, which they won 3-0. Rohit played two Tests, in Nagpur and Delhi, batting thrice at six and once at No.3, the last one ending in a seven-ball duck.
It extended his century-less streak to 27 innings, which continued until was dropped at the end of 2016. He made a comeback and scored 102* against Sri Lanka in the 2017 Nagpur Test. Over the next few years, he went on to become India’s all-format captain, and one of their standout batters.
Who are the other Test players set to play in the Ranji Trophy?
Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are confirmed to feature in the next round, with Yashasvi Jaiswal also named in the Mumbai squad. There’s speculation over whether Virat Kohli will make an appearance for Delhi.
