Watch: Gulbadin Naib was run out for the second time in as many matches, this time off a direct hit from Glenn Maxwell, which sparked a mini-collapse for Afghanistan against Australia in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Afghanistan were 98-2 after 13 overs, needing 169 for a memorable win against Australia. With 71 more needed from the last seven overs, the Asia team were in with a fine chance of causing an upset, but Naib’s runout changed the complexion of the game, and Afghanistan were unable to recover thereafter.
The first ball of the 14th over was flicked away by striker Ibrahim Zadran towards deep mid-wicket, the two batters completed an easy single. Naib wanted the second but was unable to make his ground in time as a direct rocket of a throw from Maxwell dismantled the stumps and Naib had to walk back for a 23-ball 39.
Afghanistan fast slipped to 103-6 after that, with three more wickets falling in Zampa’s over. Rashid Khan managed to play a stunning cameo, making 48* in 23 balls at the death, but Afghanistan fell four runs short to crash out of the T20 World Cup.
