Ahead of the 2020/21 Big Bash League, here’s a reminder of which sides have won the tournament before. A list of BBL champions:

BBL Champions

2011-12 – Sydney Sixers

In the inaugural season of the BBL, Sydney Sixers defeated Perth Scorchers by seven wickets in the final. After Mitchell Marsh top-scored with an unbeaten 57-ball 77 in the Scorchers’ innings, Moises Henriques’ 41-ball 70 at the top of the order – where he put on 110 with left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe – proved the key contribution in the Sixers’ win. A young Steve Smith, the captain of the Sixers, was on hand to hit the winning runs.

2012-13 – Brisbane Heat

Brisbane Heat won by 34 runs in the final against Perth Scorchers, runners-up once more. Kemar Roach, the West Indies quick who had failed to live up to expectations in the tournament, stepped up in the final to secure the win for his side, taking 3-18. Despite not taking a wicket, three catches and figures of 0-11 from three overs saw Nathan Hauritz named the player of the match.

2013-14 – Perth Scorchers

Finally, Perth Scorchers had their winning moment, defeating the Hobart Hurricanes by 39 runs. Some impressive batting from the Marsh brothers made it third-time lucky for the Scorchers: Shaun knocked 63 not out from 43 balls, with his younger brother, Mitchell, dominating late in the innings with a 12-ball 37. The player of the match was trusty Brad Hogg, who ensured that the Hurricanes’ run rate was kept well below the required 10-an-over, with his four overs costing only 17 runs and returning two wickets.

2014-15 – Perth Scorchers

Perth Scorchers made it back-to-back titles by beating the Sydney Sixers by four wickets. The final match of Brett Lee’s career proved to be the most gripping Big Bash final yet. Not only did it all came down to a thrilling final over, but the final ball too. With one to win and three balls remaining, Lee struck from the third- and second-last deliveries of his career, bowling both Nathan Coulter-Nile and Sam Whiteman. From the final ball of the match, Moises Henriques fumbled a clear run-out chance at the non-striker’s end which meant Scorchers just clinched victory with a last-gasp single.

2015-16 – Sydney Thunder

Sydney Thunder beat the Melbourne Stars by three wickets to win their first Big Bash title. The league had already been full of drama, notably with Chris Gayle equalling the world record for the fastest fifty in a T20 match, from just 12 balls. This BBL season proved to be a fine one for Usman Khawaja, whose 70 in the final, as well as 345 runs in the league, helped secure victory for his side.

2016-17 – Perth Scorchers

Perth Scorchers won by nine wickets against the Sydney Sixers in a dominant final performance. While Brisbane Heat’s Chris Lynn was the player of the tournament for an astonishing return of 309 runs from five matches, it was the same old story of the Scorchers winning the whole thing. Jhye Richardson took three wickets in the final before Michael Klinger and Ian Bell took the Scorchers home in a chase of 142.

2017-18 – Adelaide Strikers

In winning their first BBL title the Strikers had a dream day at the Adelaide Oval, winning by 25 runs against Hobart Hurricanes. Despite missing the star quality of Rashid Khan and Billy Stanlake, Jake Weatherald stepped up and hit eight sixes and nine fours in a dominant 115 from only 70 balls. The Hurricanes’ chase was stifled by the excellence of Peter Siddle, who took 3-17 from his four overs.

2018-19 – Melbourne Renegades

Melbourne Renegades won the title in extraordinary fashion, defeating their local rivals, Melbourne Stars, by just 13 runs. The Stars had victory in the palm of their hands, needing 53 from 42 balls, but a woeful collapse of seven wickets for 19 runs, achieved by the formidable work of the Renegades’ bowling attack, meant the Stars were left with 28 required from the final over to win.

2019-20 – Sydney Sixers

The Sixers won their first title since the inaugural BBL season, defeating the previous year’s runners-up by 19 runs. A rain-affected final saw the match reduced to 12 overs a side, and a Josh Philippe half-century proved key in helping the Sixers set a target of 117. Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe then shared four wickets as the Sixers came out on top.
