Watch: Virat Kohli produced an outrageous stroke off Haris Rauf during India’s T20 World Cup win over Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
With India needing 31 runs off the final two overs, the pressure was firmly on Kohli. The former India captain was up against Rauf, who had been bowling exceptionally. Four good deliveries meant that the situation was reduced to 28 runs off eight balls when Kohli decided to produce one of the greatest shots in T20 World Cup history. Rauf bowled a back of a length delivery on the stumps. Kohli gave himself a bit of room and thumped it over the bowler’s head for six. Ian Smith, who was part of the broadcast team, exclaimed, “that shot was nigh-on impossible for a normal human being”.
The six transferred the pressure onto Pakistan. Rauf then bowled a short delivery down the leg side that was pulled over the fine leg fence by Kohli. In the final over, Kohli hit another maximum and after plenty of drama, R Ashwin got the job done on the last ball.
India would hope that this victory sets the foundation for what could be a historic T20 World Cup campaign. Pakistan, meanwhile, would be ruing their missed opportunities.
