Watch: Shubman Gill smashes James Anderson over his head for step-out six, Ben Stokes nods in appreciation

Shubman Gill smashed James Anderson over his head for six | IND vs ENG
by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: Shubman Gill began day two in blistering fashion, smashing a down-the-ground six off James Anderson in the Dharamshala Test.

Gill raced to his fifty off 64 balls in a brisk start to the day, continuing from where he left off the first evening. Having taken on spinners on day one, Gill did not let England’s seamers settle in on the second morning, going after Anderson.

Off the second ball of the 34th over, he walked down the pitch and lifted Anderson over his head for six, making his intentions clear. It was a commanding hit, sending away a fuller delivery over the sightscreen. Ben Stokes, the England captain, nodded in appreciation.

Interestingly, Anderson has dismissed Gill the most times in Test cricket: five times in eight games.

Two more fours came in the same over: one, a short ball with width outside off was cut past point for a boundary, and the next ball travelled to the fine-leg boundary after flicking his pads, with no runs added to Gill’s account. Anderson went up in mini-appeal, but that was that.

This is Gill’s fourth fifty-plus score in the series: he scored 34 & 104 in the Visakhapatnam Test and followed it with 91 in Ranchi and 38 & 52* in Ranchi.

India continued to march along with Gill and Rohit in the middle: at the time of writing, they were 189-1, 29 runs behind England’s first-innings score.
