Bangladesh lost both their openers cheaply as Mohammad Naim was dismissed for 16 off 23 while Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for a duck on debut. Shakib came out to bat at No.4, with the score reading 25-2, with the job of rescuing the Bangladesh innings on his hands.
Shakib had been in decent form with the bat in ODIs this year coming into the Asia Cup, having scored 376 runs at 37.6 from 10 games. However, coming up against Pathirana, who has an awkward action, Shakib failed to adjust.

Pathirana came on to bowl in the 11th over of the innings and got the better of Shakib straight away as the latter failed to pick up a short ball angled across him from over the wicket. Shakib was late on the cut shot and managed to get a bit of glove on the ball through to the wicketkeeper.
Mendis dived to his left, sticking his left glove out. Fortunately for Sri Lanka, the ball landed right in the middle of his glove, forcing a dejected Shakib to walk back having scored just five off 11 balls.
Pathirana then proceeded to get another big wicket, that of Mushfiqur Rahim, before cleaning off the tail and finishing with figures of 4-32, his best in his ODI career so far. Bangladesh were bowled out for 164 with more than seven overs left in the innings, courtesy of Pathirana’s mop-up job with the tail.
