Rohit led India’s charge with the bat in their Super Fours clash against Sri Lanka, racing off to a 43-ball fifty to complement his 42-ball fifty against Pakistan in the previous match. In the process, he breached the 10,000-run mark in ODIs, becoming the 15th batter to do so, and the second quickest in terms of innings.
Rohit brought up his 10,000th run in the seventh over of India’s innings with a gorgeous straight six off the bowling of Kasun Rajitha. Rajitha pitched one right in the slot for Rohit to extend his arms on the straight drive and deposit the ball beyond the boundary over the bowler’s head.
Rohit did not make the best of starts to his ODI career, having taken more than 80 matches to reach the 2,000-run mark. However, since his promotion to the top of the order in 2013, he has not looked back and has transformed himself into an all-time ODI great, becoming the second quickest to the 10,000-run mark after Kohli.
He was eventually dismissed for 53 off 48 in the 16th over by left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage who had a field day, registering his first-ever ODI five-for. Part-timer Charith Asalanka then ran riot, taking four wickets for 18 runs on a turning surface, having previously taken just one wicket across 78 international games.
India were bundled out for 213. In response, Sri Lanka were 39-3 at the end of 10 overs with Jasprit Bumrah taking two wickets and Mohammed Siraj taking one.
