Batting first at St George’s, the West Indies had amassed 222-6 thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s 45-ball 78. The most England had scored while batting second against the West Indies until then was 204-9 in 2021/22, and even that had been in a defeat.
Phil Salt (109 not out in 56 balls) and Jos Buttler (51 in 34) set up the chase for England with an opening stand of 115 in 68 balls. Will Jacks did not last, but Salt continued in the company of Liam Livingstone (30 in 18).
England needed 37 in 13 balls when Harry Brook joined Salt. He lofted the first ball he faced, from Jason Holder, for six, bringing the target down to 31 in 12, but Alzarri Joseph conceded only 10 in the 19th over.
Andre Russell came to defend 21 in the last over. After Brook flicked the first ball for four, Russell pitched the second ball outside off-stump. Brook responded with an exquisite six over extra-cover.
In the dugout, Rehan Ahmed gestured a flick, presumably predicting Brook’s next shot. On the field, Russell now altered his line, but erred in length, and dished out a full-toss on leg-stua flmp that Brook casually flicked for six – exactly what Rehan had mimed.
Russell now pitched shorter, and Brook pulled towards deep mid-wicket to pick up two runs.
With three to defend in two balls, Russell pitched up outside the off-stump again. Brook played arguably the shot of his miniature innings, opening the face of the bat, middling the ball, and finding enough elevation and power to clear the deep-third ropes to seal the match.
Brook finished on 31 from seven balls as England stayed alive in the series, though the West Indies still lead 2-1.
