Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi sealed their win with an over to spare, finishing unbeaten on 48 off 45 balls. He put together a 96-run stand with Rahmat Shah off 93 balls, to follow on from a 60-run partnership between Shah and Ibrahim Zadran, and a 130-run opening stand between Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Afghanistan celebrated on the field after the win was secured, with Rashid dancing with Irfan Pathan before embracing him during the players’ lap of honour.

When the on-field celebrations were over, the players carried on the party in the dressing room. Music was blaring and the players danced and cheered around a massage table. Rashid jumped up on the table and led the team in a manic dance, before others also took their turn on top of the table.

The scenes of celebration are similar to those after Afghanistan’s win over England eight days ago. Afghanistan now have three wins in World Cup matches, with this being the first time they’ve registered more than one win in the same tournament.
