Watch: There was a bizarre moment in the Big Bash League, with Melbourne Renegades’ Nic Maddinson initially walking for a hit-wicket dismissal before being recalled when replays revealed he hadn’t trodden on the stumps, and the bails had fallen off of their own accord.
The incident occurred in the ninth over, with Maddinson on 42 off 25 balls, and Melbourne Renegades on 72-2. Brisbane Heat’s Mark Steketee bowled a short ball, to which Maddinson went back in his crease before pulling into the deep and setting off for a run.
However, he quickly threw his head back in frustration upon seeing the Zing bails behind him light up, with the stumps disturbed. Brisbane Heat began celebrating as Maddinson walked off. However, he was asked by the umpires to wait as a review took place, and these clearly showed Maddinson a distance from the stumps, with the bail falling off seemingly of its own accord.
“Oh what’s happened there?” said a bemused Ian Smith on commentary. “What has happened there? What’s it come off? What’s going on here? The bail’s just fallen off.”
The reprieve was gratefully accepted by Maddinson and Melbourne Renegades. He went to his half-century off 33 balls with a boundary, beginning a streak of 38 runs in 12 balls. He was eventually dismissed for 87, propping up Melbourne Renegades’ total of 166-7.
