Watch: The first ever bowl-out in a tied T20I game came way back in 2006 between New Zealand and West Indies, a year before the more famous tie-breaker in the group stages of the 2007 World T20 between India and Pakistan.

New Zealand’s run chase of 127 seemed to be going well; they needed just 47 in nine overs with seven wickets remaining. However, they succumbed to 110-8 to hand the advantage over to the Windies.

In the final over bowled by Ian Bradshaw, the Kiwis needed 17 to win and James Franklin smashed a six off the second ball before Shane Bond tied the game with a four off the final delivery.

There seemed to be some confusion about what would happen after the tie with one commentator quipping that we could have a “bowl off”. A clearly bewildered colleague in the commentary box wondered aloud, “A what?”

Players gathered around as five from either side took aim and jogged in to hit the stumps. Shane Bond (twice) and Scott Styris hit the target in the bowl out while no West Indies player managed to do so. It was a fitting farewell for Chris Cairns who was playing his last ever international game for the Blackcaps.
