The Chennai side leaked runs in the powerplay after deciding to bowl first in the rescheduled final, with Gill and Wriddhiman Saha piling on the misery after CSK dropped two catches early on. Deepak Chahar was the culprit on both occasions, first dropping a sitter at short leg, and then spilling another one off his own bowling.

To slow things down, Dhoni brought on spin from both ends after the powerplay, and it worked almost instantly. Off the final ball of the seventh over, Jadeja sent down a sharp-turning delivery outside off. Gill tried to prod at it, but it turned away from him, pushing him out of his crease. Behind him stood Dhoni, one of the fastest hands in the game, and he pulled off a sharp stumping, whipping the bails off in a flash.

The umpires had to check the dismissal upstairs, where it was confirmed that Gill’s foot had indeed pushed out of the crease. It was a big reprieve for CSK, as Gill has been in red-hot form and is comfortably the Orange Cap winner this season.
