India defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets at the MCA International Stadium in Pune a few nights back. Virat Kohli starred in the run-chase, scoring his 48th ODI hundred, one that needed careful calculation towards the end.
However, the game was marred by some behaviour by a few of the local fans. Videos have emerged on social media where a well-known Bangladeshi supporter, also known as ‘Tiger Shoaib’, is seen being harassed in the stands of the MCA International Stadium. The local fans are also seen tearing apart the Bangladeshi supporter’s tiger plush toy that he is famous for carrying to Bangladesh games.
This comes on the backdrop of Pakistan lodging a complaint with ICC following the behaviour of the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the game against India.
It has led to widespread reactions from the cricket community, with most condemning the general fan behaviour that has been on display at the World Cup, which has made the environment uncomfortable for the few overseas fans who have travelled to watch their teams.
After the defeat in Pune, Bangladesh will move on to Mumbai for their next game against South Africa. With just one victory from four games so far, their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals are looking bleak. They’ll have to stitch together at least four, and ideally five more wins out of their remaining five games to stand a chance.
