West Indies rebounded in the second half of the England innings after the tourists had started strongly, with 112-2 becoming 171 all out. England had flown out of the blocks, smashing 77 runs in the powerplay, and West Indies looked set to outdo them.
Brandon King took Sam Curran’s opening over for 16, while Mayers was also quickly into the act. He attacked the second ball he faced, carting the off-spin of Will Jacks way over the leg-side and onto the roof of the Kensington Oval stands.
That hit was registered at 99 metres, and the next was even bigger. Tymal Mills dropped short and Mayers pulled him effortlessly, sending the ball 103 metres this time, with a replacement again needed.
The end of the powerplay couldn’t curtail him; he hit two sixes off Rehan Ahmed’s first three balls. But the fun was over soon after, when England’s other leg-spinner, Adil Rashid, had him caught on the fence.
In the end, West Indies chased down the target easily, with four wickets and eleven balls to spare.
