Handscomb was batting for Leicestershire on the final day of their clash against Northants at the County Ground in Northampton. Due to persistent rain over the course of days two and three, the draw was a forgone conclusion, with Leicestershire starting the day two down in their first innings.
The Australia middle-order batter has signed for two years at Leicestershire, having played for them over the course of last summer, scoring a hundred on debut for the county and racking up 1,202 runs over the season. His start to this year has been quieter, with a score of 26 in the Championship opening round before back-t0-back fifties in his two innings since.
However, he was on for a first century of the summer in Northampton, putting together a 157-run partnership with Rehan Ahmed, before Nair had his say. On 99, Handscomb tucked a ball away to midwicket and tried to come through for a quick single. Nair pounced on the ball as it rolled along the ground and threw the ball at the non-striker’s stumps, falling to the ground in the process. Handscomb stretched to slide his bat in, but was short of his ground, throwing his head back in frustration as he walked off the pitch.
Handscomb has played 44 times for Australia across formats, including 20 Tests, the last of which came in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Nair has played eight times for India, all in 2016 and 2017. However, his place in India’s Test history is secure as one of their two Test triple-centurions – Virender Sehwag is the other – reaching the milestone against England at Chennai in 2016.
