Afghanistan’s promising World Cup campaign came to an end on November 10 when they lost by five wickets against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With four wins from nine games and a couple of other close shaves, Afghanistan finished sixth on the points table and won a lot of hearts with their performance.
However, the winning of hearts was not just restricted to the cricket field. Gurbaz, their star opening batter, was spotted by RJ Love Shah, an anchor from Ahmedabad, helping out the homeless on the streets of Ahmedabad at around 3 am on Diwali night (November 12).
Supposed to fly back home from Ahmedabad where Afghanistan played their last league game of the World Cup, Gurbaz decided to brighten up the faces of some of the less fortunate before doing so, as he anonymously distributed cash among several homeless people who were sleeping on the sidewalk in the middle of the night without waking them up.
Kolkata Knight Riders, for whom Gurbaz plies his trade in the Indian Premier League, shared the video captured by Shah, which has garnered a lot of love. Afghan players are known to do a lot of charity work back home. This act by Gurbaz was another such incident which won the hearts of the public.
On the field, Gurbaz had an average tournament, scoring 280 runs from nine games at 31.1 with just two fifty-plus scores. Overall, however, Afghanistan would be mighty pleased with their effort all through the World Cup, where almost everyone contributed at some point or the other, keeping them in contention for a semi-final spot right till the very end.
