Oshada Fernando affected a brilliant run-out in the final over of day three of the second Test between Sri Lanka and England, removing Joe Root for 186.

Root looked set to register his second double-hundred of the series before Fernando pulled off a stunning fielding effort from short leg. Root danced down the track against off-spinner Dilruwan Perera, trying to flick one through to the on side, only to get a thin inside edge towards Fernando. The fielder gathered the ball on the bounce and instantly fired it onto the stumps.

Replays suggested that Root’s bat was in the air when the bails came off. This was Root’s second run out in as many innings, following his bizarre dismissal in the second innings of the first Test.
