Hayley Matthews played an innings of a lifetime, scoring 132 off 64 balls in a run-chase of 213. She accounted for more than 60 per cent of her team’s runs and was ably supported by Stefanie Taylor, who scored 59 off 41 before Chinelle Henry and Shemaine Campbelle laid the finishing touches to take West Indies to a world record victory.
At one stage, West Indies were cruising at 185-1 from 16.5 overs, needing 28 from 19 with nine wickets in hand. Taylor’s dismissal off the next ball and Matthews’ dismissal off the fifth ball of the 19th over meant that things got tight.
With nine needed off seven balls and two new batters at the crease, it looked like Australia had found just the opening they needed to turn the screws on the game.

But the calmness of Henry and Campbelle ensured that West Indies managed to go over the line with one ball to spare, making it the highest run-chase ever recorded in women’s T20I history. The previous highest run-chase belonged to England women who had chased down a target of 199 against India five years back in 2018.
Understandably, the entire West Indies dugout was ecstatic with the victory as could be seen in their celebrations as soon as Henry scampered back for two and made her ground at the non-striker’s end.
With this victory, West Indies have levelled the three-match T20I series 1-1 with just one more match to go.
