Watch: Akash Madhwal, the uncapped Mumbai Indians quick, scythed through Sunrisers Hyderabad’s middle order in a must-win game, cleaning up Heinrich Klaasen and Harry Brook off back-to-back deliveries during their IPL 2023 fixture in Mumbai.

Madhwal, the 29-year-old playing in his debut IPL season, finished with a four-wicket haul to help restrict SRH to 200-5 in 20 overs. At one point, they looked on course for a much bigger score: after 16 overs, they were 168-1.

Mumbai managed to pull things back in the last four overs, led by Madhwal. He first dismissed Mayank Agarwal (83), SRH’s top-scorer in the match, in the 17th over. The 19th over was even better – he conceded just six runs and dismissed Klaasen and Brook off back-to-back deliveries.

Klaasen, a centurion in the previous game, could not get bat on a length ball that angled in and rattled his stumps: he tried to heave it, but could not get in line of the ball. Next ball, Harry Brook fell for a golden duck, the third time he has failed to trouble scorers this season. The English batter tried to hit it across the line too, but could do little as a yorker seared in and castled him. Barring his century against KKR, Brook ended the tournament without crossing 30 in any of his other innings.

Madhwal finished with figures of 4-0-37-4. Mumbai Indians need to win the game to keep their qualification hopes alive, with the result of the RCB vs GT game also playing a part.
