Dewald Brevis catch

Watch: Playing for Titans in a T20 Challenge match at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, Dewald Brevis took a flying catch in the outfield to dismiss Boland captain Ferisco Adams off Junior Dala.

Boland were left reeling at 15-3 after Titans captain Aaron Phangiso won the toss and put them in. Wicketkeeper Clyde Fortuin (29 in 26 balls) and Farhaan Behardien (63 not out in 51) then added 59 before Brevis ran out the former. Dala then took out Michael Copeland, and the Titans were 108-5 when Dala ran in to bowl the fourth ball of the 18th over, to Adams.

Dala was off target, bowling short of a length but on leg and middle. There was little wrong with Adams’s pull: he hit the ball hard and flat, and into the gap at wide mid-wicket. It would have taken a near-miracle to prevent a boundary, but that was exactly what Brevis produced.

Brevis sprinted before flinging himself full length to grab the catch with both hands. He tumbled over, but did not lose control of the ball, prompting the commentator to hail the effort as “superman stuff”.

Behardien batted through the Boland innings to take them to 121-8 as Dala finished with 3-20. Brevis’s leg-breaks did not fetch a wicket, but his two overs went for 10. He then set off in characteristic fashion, racing to 22 in 11 balls with two fours and two sixes, setting up the chase for the Titans. Almost immediately, there was a floodlight failure, with the Titans on 29-1 after 2.4 overs.

Set to chase an adjusted target of 108 in 17 overs, the Titans reached 87-2 inside 14 overs before collapsing in spectacular fashion. They finished with 103-7 to lose their first match of the season. They are on 18 points, five clear of any other side, while Boland are fourth, on 12. Both teams have played five matches each.
