Watch: Glenn Phillips hilariously runs to square leg in attempt to hit accidental Sam Curran moonball

by Wisden Staff 4 minute read

Watch: There was a hilarious incident in Saturday’s Rajasthan Royals-Chennai Super Kings encounter, in which New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips went after a Sam Curran moonball gone wrong.

While the highlight of the Rajasthan Royals innings were their batters hitting the Chennai bowlers into oblivion, one particular incident saw the ball attempting to reach the stratosphere with no added input from the batting side.

The game was all but done by the time England’s Sam Curran ran into bowl the second ball of the 17th over. However, the ‘special’ delivery that he bowled managed to outfox not only the batter but everyone else on the field and the commentary box.

The ball slipped out of his hand, and flew right behind the batter’s position. Phillips wasn’t prepared to let any opportunity to score go, and ran behind his stumps in an attempt to hit the “moonball” which took its sweet time to return on the ground, way out of the batter’s reach.

The commentators laughed their hearts out at the batter’s frantic attempt to hit the seemingly unreachable delivery, even as Curran and Phillips chuckled at what had just happened.

Curran conceded 55 runs from his four overs, actually a slight improvement on his previous performance, in which he leaked 0-56 in four overs. Rajasthan Royals chased down a seemingly hefty 190-run target with ease, with seven wickets and 15 balls to spare.
