Watch: ‘Eight 12s were 76 when I went to school’ – Mark Waugh gets his sums wrong on Australia TV

by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

Australia great Mark Waugh got his maths wrong in humorous fashion while fulfilling punditry duties during Australia’s emphatic Super 12 win over Bangladesh.

With Australia requiring a sizeable Net Run Rate swing to boost their chances of progression and having bowled Bangladesh out for 73, Waugh backed Aaron Finch’s side to chase down the target in quick time.

While trying to work out just how quickly Australia could feasibly chase down Bangladesh’s score, Waugh did some sums out loud to see what might be possible.

He said: “10 overs, maximum! Eight overs. Eight 12s were 76 when I went to school…eight overs.” His mental arithmetic was met with silence from his co-presenters. Waugh might have got his maths wrong (eight 12s are actually 96), but the gist of his thinking proved to be correct.

Australia chased down 73 off 6.2 overs at a rate of 12.31 runs per over – almost exactly what Waugh suggested Australia achieve.
