‘Top players have lacked that sense because they enjoy the buttering’ – Venkatesh Prasad calls out players who give journalist ‘bullies’ a platform

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

The aftermath of Wriddhiman Saha’s public calling out of an unnamed journalist continued as former India quick Venkatesh Prasad took to social media to condemn big players who gave certain journalists a platform.

The India wicketkeeper, who was recently dropped from the Test side, took to social media recently to reveal a set of messages that he had received from a journalist. The messages had a threatening tone and showed that the individual was pressurising Saha into giving an interview.

There were several strong reactions from former cricketers and prominent journalists. Now Prasad gave his take on the issue.

The former India bowling coach said that certain entitled journalists had behaved like ‘bullies’.

“While there are some exceptional sports journalists, who love the game, are passionate and respect the players while having boundaries, certain entitled ones just, because of proximity to big players have been bullies report [sic] just to sensationalise with no knowledge & substance.”

Prasad added that while such journalists shouldn’t be given a platform in the first place, some ‘top players’ had lacked the sense to avoid them.

“It is equally important for players who give these kind of brash journalist a platform & unnecessary access to have better sense of who to be close to and have a clear boundary. I am afraid some top players have lacked that sense just because they enjoy the buttering. #Saha”
