Netherlands were reeling at 112-6 at the end of 27 overs after being sent to bat first in a rain-reduced contest. When it seemed that South Africa would tighten their grip on the game further, skipper Edwards emerged as the resisting force. He partnered with veteran all-rounder Roelef van der Merwe to stage a resurgence for his side’s stuttering innings. Edwards racked up an unbeaten 78 off 69 by hitting ten boundaries a six.
Meanwhile, van der Merwe delivered with a quickfire innings of 29 off just 19 deliveries. The upper-cut six that came off pacer Gerald Coetzee epitomised the blitz. Aryan Dutt blasted his way to a rampant 23 from nine balls, smashing three maximums. The cameo capped off Netherlands’ comeback as they finished at 245-8 in a rain-curtailed innings of 43 overs.
The Dutch were vigilant right from the start while defending the total. They introduced spin early in the innings to dismantle the top order. Colin Ackerman sent Quinton de Kock packing for 20 (22), while van der Merwe contributed with twin strikes in the form of captain Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen to derail the chase.
Paul van Meekeren ensured that Aiden Markram (1) was back without causing any damage. Logan van Beek took out the ominous-looking duo of David Miller ( 43) and Heinrich Klaasen (28) to put an end to South Africa’s hopes. Later, he claimed the last wicket of Keshav Maharaj in the final over, propelling his team to an iconic 38-run victory. This was also their maiden triumph against a Test nation.
