Usman Khawaja left out of Australia’s central contracts list

Usman Khawaja was left out of the central contracts list for the first time in five years as Cricket Australia announced a fresh 20-member list for the 2020/21 season.

The list comprised as many as six new names, including Marnus Labuschagne, who had a breakthrough 2019, and Mitchell Marsh, the all-rounder, who missed out on the list last year, but has earned his place back after a recent return to form.

Matthew Wade, Joe Burns, Kane Richardson and Ashton Agar were the other four new names on the list, while Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Marcus Stoinis, Shaun Marsh and Ashton Turner were among those who missed out, along with Khawaja.

“As Mitch Marsh and Matthew Wade have proven, there are always plenty of opportunities for those who have missed out to be reselected by performing consistently at domestic level; and importantly to make the most of any opportunity that comes their way at international level,” said Trevor Hohns, the men’s national selector.

“As is always the case, there are unlucky omissions, but because you are not on the list does not mean you cannot be selected to represent Australia.”

Among the women’s players, Nicole Bolton and Elyse Villani missed out from the 15-strong list of contracted players, as did Erin Burns and Molly Strano. Tahlia McGrath, Tayla Vlaeminck and Annabel Sutherland were the new names on the list.

Centrally-contracted men’s players: Ashton Agar, Joe Burns, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa

Centrally-contracted women’s players: Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Delissa Kimmince, Meg Lanning, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham
