Former Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes has been appointed as head coach of Bangladesh.

The 53-year-old former England wicket-keeper has signed until the end of the World T20 in 2020.

Bangladesh have been without a permanent head coach since the sudden resignation of Chandika Hathurusingha in October 2017. He is now in charge of Sri Lanka, while Courtney Walsh has been in interim charge of the Tigers.

Rhodes played 11 Tests and nine ODIs and had been in charge at Worcestershire since 2006, having played for them for 20 years. But he was sacked last year after it emerged that he had failed to report the arrest of one of his player, Alex Hepburn. He was also removed as head coach of the England under 19 team on the eve of the Under 19 World Cup.

During his extended spell in charge at Worcestershire, operating on limited resources, Rhodes developed a reputation as a hard-working coach capable of bringing through young talent and galvanising an underdog squad.
