A no-fly zone at Old Trafford has been introduced in order to prevent any political banners being flown over the ground during the World Cup semi-final between India and New Zealand.

The Greater Manchester Police (GMP) accepted the ICC’s request for the ban to be put in place for the semi-final after political messages appeared during India’s final group-stage match against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

“We are very happy with the plans put in place by GMP and comfortable there will be no repeat of what we saw at Headingley,” said an ICC spokesman.

The governing body for international cricket made the police aware of the political statements carried out during the India-Sri Lanka match, and said it did not condone “political messages” at the World Cup.

After receiving a request from Greater Manchester Police, The Civil Aviation Authority said the no-fly zone would remain in place until Wednesday morning.
