England’s World Cup-winners were named Team of the Year at the 2017 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards on Sunday night.

Anya Shrubsole, the six-wicket hero of July’s dramatic Lord’s final and nominee for the iconic individual prize, received over 15,000 votes but did not feature in the top three for the overall award, with Mo Farah the recipient.

The award caps a breakthrough year for women’s cricket after a hugely successful hosting of the World Cup that saw record attendance and global audiences, as well as victory for the home side in stunning fashion as Shrubsole took 5-11 in 19 balls to beat India at the last. They did, however, go on to lose the Ashes on Australian soil.

Off-spinner Danni Hazell said: “Thank you for the award, it’s been a fantastic year for women’s cricket and women’s sport in general. Hopefully we have gone places to inspire women’s cricket and beyond.”
