Babar Azam has resigned as Pakistan captain from all three formats.
He was at the helm of the team that crashed out of the 2023 World Cup, failing to qualify for the semi-finals after finishing fifth in the league stage with four wins and five losses.
In May 2020, he was named Pakistan’s ODI and T20I captain, taking over from Sarfaraz Ahmed. In November the same year, he was appointed Test captain.
On November 15, he made his resignation public, posting the announcement on social media. Earlier in the day, he had met PCB’s interim committee chairman Zaka Ashraf, in Lahore.
Babar becomes the third high-profile resignation in Pakistan cricket over the month, following Inzamam-ul-Haq stepping down as chief selector, and Morne Morkel’s exit as bowling coach.
Babar’s resignation statement in full
“I vividly remember the moment when I received the call from the PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world.
“Reaching the number 1 spot in the white-ball format was a result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management but I’d like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey.
“Today, I am stepping down as captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call.
