Latest ICC Test rankings: Labuschagne is the new No.1 batter, Robinson achieves career-best

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Marnus Labuschagne has displaced Joe Root as the new No.1 Test batter in the latest ICC men’s rankings, reaching the top spot after nine months.

Labuschagne scored 204 and an unbeaten 104 in the first Test against West Indies, becoming the eighth batter to score a double-hundred and a hundred in the same Test match. It also saw rise up two places to regain the top spot. He now has 935 rating points, just one below his career-best ratings, and will have the opportunity to achieve a new personal best during the second Test match that begins on Thursday.

Root, who climbed to the top of the rankings after making five hundreds and a fifty in 12 Tests this year, made 23 and 73 in the first Test match in Pakistan to slip to No.4, below Steve Smith and Babar Azam, both of whom scored hundreds last week. Smith went on to convert his hundred into a double to enter the top two for the first time since January 2021.

There was one big movement in the bowling charts. Ollie Robinson, who picked up a match haul of five wickets in the Rawalpindi Test match, not only achieved his career-best rating of 754 points but also jumped seven spots to eighth in the list. It is the first time he has entered the top ten.

His teammate James Anderson, who picked up five wickets as well, jumped two places to No.3. With 887 points, Australian captain Pat Cummins continued to lead the list. He is 45 points clear of second-placed R Ashwin,
